The Story

Hydrangea anomala, the Japanese climbing-hydrangea, a popular ornamental plant, due to its attractive and numerous creamy-white lacy-looking flowers, it's shiny foliage, and it's relatively non-aggressive nature.

It is a woody climbing plant, growing to 12 m height up trees or rock faces, climbing by means of small aerial roots on the stems. The leaves are deciduous, ovate, 7-13 cm long and 4-10 cm broad, with a heart-shaped base. The flowers are, produced in flat corymbs up to 15 cm (6")diameter in mid-summer.

Climbing Hydrangea vines are self-supporting, and a trellis or other supports are not needed. They will cling and climb their way up structures, reaching a height of 30-80' tall. As these plants tolerate pruning very well, they are sometimes grown as a small shrub.
