The showy blue-violet flowers are arranged in dense clusters, and blooms in late summer and early fall. It is pollinated by many native bees and attracts butterflies. It is a larval host for the pearly crescent butterfly (Phyciodes tharos).
It is found in gardens, fields, in open woods and roadsides. It is tolerant of dry soils.
