The Story
Riverbank Grape is an incredibly resilient, fast-growing native vine perfect for northern gardeners. It provides rapid coverage for arbors or fences with deep green, heart-shaped leaves and reddish stems. Its sweetly scented spring flowers yield tart bluish-black berries that sweeten after a frost, which attract local wildlife. The small highly fragrant, greenish-yellow flowers bloom in loose drooping clusters in late spring (May to June), followed by small, globe-shaped berries transition from green to a deep bluish-black, coated in a powdery white "bloom". It is a magnet for local pollinators, birds, and small mammals.
The berries are highly prized for making homemade jams, jellies, and juices.
Thrives and produces the most fruit in full sun, though it can tolerate partial shade. Will easily tolerate both drought and temporary spring flooding. Extremely cold-tolerant (USDA Zones 3–9), making it a staple of northern gardens.
Because of its spreading nature, gardeners should monitor its reach to ensure it does not smother nearby desirable plants or small trees
